900 MHz of Awesome

Welcome to Truckputer.com this site is a chronological recording of my Ram 1500 truckputer project. The goal is to document the progress from installation to regular upgrades of the system and truck, as well as inspire others to pursue carputing for them selves.

The Computer

My computer of choice is the Samsung Q1 UMPC (ultra mobile PC); I picked this up refurbished on a beloved website www.woot.com. The Q1 futures a 7 inch touch screen, 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB of memory, and a 900 MHz Intel Celeron processor. It supports 802.3 Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wireless and Bluetooth and comes equipped with a genuine copy of Windows XP Tablet edition. It incorporates 2 built in USB 2.0 ports, Compact flash port Type II, stereo speakers, audio out and a microphone array. With all the available I/O’s there is plenty of room for upgrades down the road. There’s not much you can’t do with this computer that you can with any desktop. The only downside of using a UMPC is the lack of optical drive, but with the convenience of a wireless network installing software is a breeze. Did I mention its battery powered? It will run for up to 3 hours with the truck off so fast-food dining and surfing is painless and environmentally safe.
